The use of certain iPad apps can be very effective for encouraging children with Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI), sometimes known as Cerebral Visual Impairment, to use their functional vision. The backlighting on devices like the iPad is greatly helpful, and the variety of apps can be used for both play and literacy.
My daughter is still in Phase 1 on The CVI Range by Dr. Christine Roman-Lantzy so I do not yet let her explore any apps. But based on recommendations from CVI educators, I plan to start once she has progressed to Phase 2 or Phase 3, depending on the goal, the purpose of the app and the level of visual complexity.
In the meantime, I’m curating a list of apps that have been named as favorites by parents who have children with CVI. I have also curated a list of cartoons for children with CVI here.
